The BCCI is considering Pragyan Ojha, a former left-arm spinner, to take over as India’s temporary head selector. Ajit Agarkar’s term will expire on October 4, 2026. According to rumours citing BCCI sources, Ojha would take over the post as soon as Agarkar steps down.
Ajit Agarkar final assignment as chief selector was to manage the Indian team’s selection for the upcoming home one-day international series against the West Indies. As of September 30, 2026, no official public notification had been issued confirming Ojha’s interim appointment, and the BCCI had not provided a specific reason for his resignation.
According to Cricbuzz, the BCCI has urged Pragyan Ojha to take over leadership, if only temporarily.
What is Pragyan Ojha’s cricketing record for India?
Pragyan Ojha represented India in all three formats during his career, which lasted from the late 2000s to the early 2010s. He finished with 144 international wickets from 24 Tests, 18 ODIs, and 6 T20Is. His strongest sport was Test cricket, when he averaged 30.27 and took 113 wickets.
In 2013, he made his final international appearance at the Wankhede Stadium, which also served as Sachin Tendulkar’s farewell to the game. Ojha’s international career came to a fitting and memorable close when he grabbed ten wickets and was named Player of the Match.
What are the upcoming assignments for the selection panel?
The committee will have a hectic schedule in the coming weeks, since Ojha is expected to serve as its interim leader. The most essential responsibility is to finalise squads for India’s tour to New Zealand, which will take place from October 22 to November 27, 2026.
That tour included two Test series, three One-Day International series, and five Twenty20 International series. Additionally, the selectors are expected to draft an India squad. A three-test assignment given during the same tour frame increases the workload during the changeover phase.

The BCCI has not yet announced a permanent replacement for Agarkar. According to sources, Parthiv Patel is one of the candidates being considered for the full-time position; but, as of September 30, 2026, no appointment had been confirmed.
