Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed his support for Kuldeep Yadav for the 2027 ODI World Cup in South Africa, underscoring the spinner’s significance in India’s strategy. Ashwin’s endorsement follows Kuldeep’s exceptional performance in the first ODI against the West Indies at Thiruvananthapuram on September 27, 2026, which India won by eight wickets.

The Player of the Match award was awarded to Kuldeep Yadav, who claimed four wickets for 40 in ten overs. His four wickets occurred at a critical juncture, as he caused a collapse after the tourists had reached 135 without loss in the 20th over by taking four of the first five wickets to fall. John Campbell, Shai Hope, Justin Greaves, and Jewel Andrew comprised Kuldeep’s four victims.

Ashwin’s unwavering support for Kuldeep and the 2027 World Cup

Despite his recent limited selection in ODI cricket, Ashwin’s support for Kuldeep emphasises his status. The September 27 match was a significant return to the format for Kuldeep, who had previously accompanied the Indian team to England for three ODIs in 2026 without participating. The spinner’s performance illustrated his capacity to perform under high-pressure circumstances.

Kuldeep’s selection context and match-winning performance

Virat Kohli’s 139 not out off 88 balls was instrumental in India’s victory, which was the result of their strong batting performances. Kuldeep’s intervention with the ball was instrumental in restricting the opposition and establishing the groundwork for India’s successful run chase, despite the fact that the West Indies had posted 295 for seven in their innings.
