Tanush Kotian was added to India’s Test team for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in December 2024 after Ravichandran Ashwin quit in the middle of the series. The off-spinner from Mumbai hasn’t played in a Test match in over two years. He has stayed dedicated to improving his skills even though he has seen other spin-bowling all-rounders, like Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain, get their Test starts earlier in 2026.
To improve his technical skills, Kotian has worked closely with Sunil Joshi, a former spin bowler for India, at the Center of Excellence in Bengaluru and with Jatin Paranjape, a former batter for Mumbai and India, in Mumbai. The last time India went on tour to Sri Lanka, he was a net bowler for the team. Kotian thought about how ready he was for international cricket as he talked about his growth as a cricket player.
The spinner has been working on different ways to use the crease to challenge batters from different angles. He went into great detail about his technical improvements, saying that he has been working on learning how to bowl from different spots in relation to the stumps and how to change his approach for left-handed and right-handed batsmen. Kotian has also been learning new skills with the new ball. For example, he used the arm ball for the first time during the Duleep Trophy.
Gaikwad, who is the captain of West Zone, asked Tanush Kotian to start the Duleep Trophy quarterfinal bowling match against North Zone. Tanush Kotian hit two sixes when the ball was 48 overs old, ending with 4 for 72 in the first innings and 4 for 46 in the second. This was despite not having much success with the new ball at first. In the second innings, he got rid of left-hander Ayush Doseja for the second time. This time, he used the new ball in his first over.
From his first game in December 2018 to now, Tanush Kotian has taken 146 first-class wickets at an average of 27.19. He has played in four Duleep Trophy tournaments and scored a hundred and fifty in the Irani Cup over the last five years. Two years ago, he was on a team that won the SMAT with an economy rate of 7.44 in a high-scoring tournament.
IPL platform and focus on home
The spinner hasn’t played much IPL yet. He was picked up by the Rajasthan Royals in 2024 to replace the injured Jos Buttler and bat first with Yashasvi Jaiswal, but he has only played in one IPL game. There was no sale of Tanush Kotian at the IPL 2025 mega-auction in Saudi Arabia.
Tanush Kotian says the IPL is still an important place to be seen by selectors.
He said that the IPL is very different from other leagues when it comes to performance and getting noticed. Even though he hasn’t been picked for the Test yet, Kotian is still focused on how he did at home and what the future holds.

The first game of the Ranji Trophy season will be between Mumbai and Chandigarh on October 11, 2026. Tanush Kotian was looking forward to going to New Zealand in the second half of November 2026 to play two Tests for India. This was in addition to the home Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test series at the beginning of 2027. He was adamant about making his case for being picked for the foreign team during the domestic season.
