Veda Krishnamurthy has lobbied for Deepti Sharma to captain the UP Warriorz in the WPL (Women’s Premier League) 2027 season. The former India batter made her case during a post-auction debate on the franchise’s squad composition and leadership structure.
Veda Krishnamurthy proposed that the franchise prioritize an Indian player for the leadership position, stating the strategic advantages such a move would provide for team balance and squad selection.
Why does an Indian captain make sense for the UP Warriors?
She stated that if an Indian captain led the side, the franchise would not have to lose squad balance or playing XI flexibility.
Krishnamurthy noted that Meg Lanning might play a supporting role in the leadership system without necessarily becoming the captain. This system would allow the UP Warriorz to pick the best available players without having to include an overseas captain in the playing XI.
Deepti’s four-year involvement with UP Warriorz makes her an obvious contender for leadership, according to Krishnamurthy.
UP Warriorz began the WPL 2027 auction with the greatest purse available, which they used to further expand their roster. Sophie Molineux, Grace Harris, Sneh Rana, Sushma Verma, and Kathryn Bryce are among the franchise’s new signings.
