Harmanpreet Kaur quit as India’s all-format leader on October 6, 2026, and Smriti Mandhana was named captain of the team for all formats. Smriti Mandhana has been India’s captain in 18 T20Is and 4 ODIs before, so he brings experience to the job. As of October 16, three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) are set to take place in Raipur, which will be her first full-time job.

On October 7, 2026, Smriti, Harmanpreet, head coach Amol Muzumdar, and BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia met in Guwahati for a strategy review meeting to talk about the change. Smriti was a part of the meeting where the Zimbabwe squads were chosen by Amita Sharma and the selection panel. Anjum Chopra, a former Indian cricket player, has evaluated Mandhana’s readiness for the job and pointed out the clear benefits she brings to the position of captain compared to those who came before her.

Bring forward the best parts: Ijum

Anjum told Mandhana that she shouldn’t try to be like Harmanpreet Kaur as a leader, but should instead write her own way. She told Smriti that she should use the 12 to 13 years of experience she has had with India and the lessons she had learned from previous leaders to help her make better decisions and move the team forward.

Getting to the Champions Trophy will be very important: Anjum

Anjum thinks that India’s players will need some time to get used to Smriti Mandhana being captain, but he thinks the change will go smoothly. She said that the Zimbabwe series would give everyone a chance to get used to the new command structure. Chopra also talked about how important it is for each person to take responsibility and for everyone to be clear as India gets ready for the challenges that lie ahead.

Smriti Mandhana has been a captain before: Anjum

Anjum said that Smriti Mandhana experience, especially her success as captain of Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the WPL, made her a better person to lead India. She thinks Smriti has learned the skills and gained the knowledge needed for the job. Chopra also said that her leadership will be judged by the choices she makes, how well she plans, and how well she can lead the team forward.
